The season is now over, excluding the CL final of course. Managers are lining up their transfer targets - with City already showing their intent with the signings of Bernardo Silva and Ederson.
On the Chelsea front, there is still uncertainty regarding Diego Costa's future. In a recent interview, he made it clear that Atletico is still his preferred destination. For Chelsea fans, this seems like deja vu. These comments seem to come around every summer. This summer, it looks extremely likely he'll go. Manchester United have been heavily linked with Antione Griezmann. I think he'll go and that will open the door for a Costa move. So, where does that leave Chelsea?
The two most likely signings, in my opinion, are Alvaro Morata and Romelu Lukaku. Two very good young strikers. Which would be the better option though?
Lukaku brings certified goals. He has a proven track record in the Premier League. He's in the 'Drogba mold' - has pace and power in abundance. His touch and general build up play could definitely improve, but he's got time to work on that. I do think his dribbling ability sets him apart from Costa, especially when it comes to Chelsea's counter attacking approach. Plus, the variety of finish he is capable of, make him a good asset. My one detracting factor regarding Lukaku is big games. The memory of him missing the penalty against Bayern in the Super Cup still haunts me. His big game performances generally aren't great, but you could chalk that up to him playing for an inferior side in Everton.
Morata, however, is slightly different. He's more of a goal poacher and that has been more evident this season at Madrid. He scored 20 goals in all competitions this season, albeit, from limited game time. He's a willing runner of the channels and his general hold up play is very good. He's got good pace, which is always an asset, especially in the Premier League. His movement is exceptional. He has also shown that he doesn't shy away from a big occasion with goals in both legs of Juventus' CL final against Real Madrid.
So, who's the best option for Chelsea? It's close. Both have their own merit. Personally, I'd prefer Morata. However, Lukaku's track record of banging in England is a huge bonus. Morata has shown that he can do it on the European stage though. Morata might have a higher ceiling than Lukaku and also has the advantage of having played in two different leagues already. Both will be World Class strikers and will terrorise Europe for years to come.
